Sphecius speciosus

I had noticed a large pile of sand on the driveway. I figured it was a big anthill and paid it little heed, until I saw an immense hornet emerge from the pile of sand. Burrowing yellowjackets are not good neighbors.

Fortunately, this wasn't yellow jackets, or bald hornets, or any such vermin. It's a cicada killer, Sphecius speciosus:




and they're apparently mostly harmless, and perhaps beneficial, in that too many cicadas aren't good for the trees. They are also solitary: one per hole is all you get. So I'm going to leave it alone.

That is one hell of a hornet, but i love solitary hornets. She's lovely.
