Let's stop giving your highest recommendation to painfully earnest books about teenage cancer patients. You know all the students are going to rush out to read this now, and the experience might warn them away from reading for the rest of their lives.

Christ, when I remember what they had in our middle school and high school libraries... and that was in an ultra-Christian conservative small town.
I had read most of the Vonnegut that existed, a lot of early Heinlein, and even Goodbye Columbus in my high school library. What I remember liking best was Rafael Sabatini, though.
