Notes on Cant

Feminist cant (patriarchy, rape culture, male gaze, sexual objectification &c. &c.) conveys a single message with great consistency, and that message is that Men Are Pigs.

I suspect it's a general feature of in-group cants. While I'm a Christian, Christian cant (witnessing, born again, voice of the Spirit, walk with Christ &c. &c.) bugs me too. I don't speak fluent Christian and don't try. It strikes me as elitist and exclusionary. The ideas it seeks to convey is that Christians are set apart and enjoy a special relationship with Jesus. Even though these things may in a sense be true from a Christian perspective, I also think there's a temptation there.

All of these cants aim at establishing a walled garden of ideas. This is a bad thing, in an Orwellian sense. By staying within the boundaries of the language that encodes the belief system, you exclude "sin" or "false consciousness" and stay within the boundaries of what has been previously established as revealed truth.
