Notes on Cant II

It's about rhetorical style. First and foremost, the most salient features of the Cant are not about women.

"Patriarchy" is obviously not about women. "Male gaze" is not about women. "Rape culture" -- be honest with me here -- isn't really about the femaleness of victims. "Mansplaining?" - are you beginning to see a pattern here?

I don't know how plainer I can be about this. The Cant is always going to alienate men. It will be perceived as hostile, mostly because it is hostile. If you seek political or social change, it is a stumbling block in your way.

Part of the task is to separate the cant, as you call it, from the actual problems. It's not that things like "male privilege" don't exist. The idea behind privilege is an average person's default thinking. It's like you have to be able to picture something as possible. That's why setting examples in everyday life, and making changes in the media, including culture jamming, are so important.
