On Charlie's Angels

To think back to the original Charlie's Angels is to remind yourself that police and detective shows have gone so very far downhill. The silliness of the premise is enough to make this a serious work of art. I remember when police shows used to end in car chases and gunplay rather than Method-acted browbeatings and implausible courtroom speeches. The special effects were quite limited, but they at least didn't blow their budget on body parts for shock autopsies.

But of course the current crime drama shows, scarcely distinguishable one from another, contain Foyne Acting and address Serious Issues of Public Interest because they're Ripped from Today's Headlines. This means that you aren't supposed to notice that they take themselves very seriously and aren't much fun.

They too will become a nostalgic taste, though. Method acting is going camp even as we speak, turning into a parody of itself. It will be interesting soon.
